It's a good sign when the doctor is "tickled"

Wynn survived his ureter reconstruction, known as a pyleplasty, yesterday at Primary Children's. The surgery took almost exactly 4 hours. The doctor came out and told us that he was "tickled" they were able to do both sides.  (Brian and I didn't even know it was a concern.) Due to the immense swelling caused by the fluid, the doctor actually resected part of his renal pelvis--kinda like gastric bypass for the kidneys! His recovery nurse was the first to note to us that "he came out of the anethesia well" especially considering the length of time he was under.  The breathing tube was still in when he opened his eyes and apparently, he just looked around.  When we saw him his face was really puffy from the excess fluids and lying on his stomach for the operation.

He came out with two slits in his back with tubes coming out of them.  The tubes go from a outer diaper through the skin, coil in the kidneys, and run down his ureter into his bladder.  So he is draining normlly as well as from the tubes.  He arrived at his room with all nurses noting that most children are not this calm directly following surgery...at this point we still think they are trying to be nice.  Everyone also noted what a charmer he is...this we know, of course. 

The night was torture.  I appreciate all the loving work nurses do, but about 2 am when she was checking his pulse again and he was screaming and pushing her away, I wanted to let her know that I thought his heart was still beating...just a guess.  All sleep deprivation aside, we had great nurses to take care of him. 

The morning nurse greeted me the amazed comment that she couldn't believe he hadn't had any narcotics  since the diladid/phentanyl he received in recovery.  He had received round the clock IV toradol.  I started to believe he must be doing pretty well when I turned around and saw him shimmying up the incline of the crib to escape.

He did far better than we anticipated, considering he were hopeful he would be released Sunday.  He was given the go ahead to leave after we tested his acceptance to oxy-codone since he had never had it before.  The tubes will be removed in 2 weeks and we will go back for another ultrasound in 1 month.

We are so grateful for his speedy recovery and hope his kidneys contiue to drain well.  Thanks again for all your love and support.  Pictures to come.
