The circle of life. Being a new dad, I've thought of some of those situations in life where I'll need to explain a principle to Wynn, usually because some event that Wynn has heard, seen, or participated in and doesn't quite understand has transpired. You know, moments like where Mufasa explains the circle of life to his son Simba. Easy enough.
Should Wynn have observed the following spectacle, I'm not sure I could use the whole 'circle of life' bit to explain...
Two days after the 4th of July party caravans departed, another exciting spectacle unfolded at the old Thompson farm, our home. Megan was caring for Wynn, while my mother-in-law Diane watched over the both of them. Situation normal. All of a sudden they heard an odd chirping sound soon followed by the most intense growling and general hysterics from our dog Lavell coming from the back patio. Lavell's antics were directed toward one of the window wells...and this is what they found: a chirping rock-chuck, backed into a corner.

Diane summoned enough courage to fish the chuck out of the window well, while Lavell was removed from the scene temporarily. Unfortunately, despite the successful plucking of Chuck from the window-well, he did not run away but shimmied behind the generator near the west door of the garage. Lavell was summoned again to try to scare him out to no avail. Lavell was incarcerated again while Diane doused the beast with water from the hose...but the drowning technique seemed only to strengthen Chuck's resolve to stand his ground. Meg grabbed the nearest shovel and poked the beast from his hiding spot, eventually succeeding. Chuck ran to the lilac bush nearest the home, where he remained--chirping--until I came home from work hours later. Lavell had tried to get at Chuck without success throughout the day...apparently my presence resulted in a doubling of Lavell's efforts, because this is what followed.
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING VIDEO MAY NOT BE APPROPRIATE FOR TENDER HEARTS OR CHUCK-LOVERS AMONG US.1) Lavell locates Chuck in the middle of the lilac bush...Chuck chirps at Lavell in defense.
2) The chase is on! Lavell has succeeded in dislodging Chuck from the lilac bush and in the open...Chuck employs some evasive maneuvers and nearly makes it to the thicker lilac bush...nearly.

Wynn couldn't watch...

3) Lavell nabs Chuck. Game over. Lavell has defended his home turf and protected his family from the vicious creature, Chuck. Stay tuned for the yet unmade sequel...
Rocky/Chuck/Marmot is really cool. I have never seen one so close to a house. We saw rock chucks when we went to Shoshone falls. So sad.
